Strange new LG smartphone with POLED display and dedicated Google Assistant button appears online
HIGHLIGHTS

A new LG smartphone codenamed ‘judypn’, featuring Snapdragon 845, has been spotted online, but it’s unclear if it’s the LG V40 ThinQ. Let’s analyse what we know.

Samsung’s got big launch plans with the upcoming Galaxy Note 9, you say? Well, it seems LG might also be preparing for the launch of yet another flagship. We’re talking about the LG V40 ThinQ, a smartphone that we reported earlier would have a total of five cameras. Now though, XDA Developers says a new mysterious LG smartphone sporting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset has appeared online. There is a problem though: no one’s sure if this new mysterious phone is actually the LG V40 ThinQ or something different. What we know for sure is that it bears the codename ‘judypn’.

The codename judypn is an extension of the base codename judy. We know that codenames judyp and judyln belong to the LG V35 ThinQ and the LG G7 ThinQ respectively. So it’s evident the three are somehow family. But unlike the other two which have either a POLED display or a notch, the judypn has both. XDA reports that the recently obtained firmware files were analysed by senior XDA members only to reveal a dedicated Google Assistant button. Such a button is already present on the LG G7 ThinQ. So, all this points to the possibility that judypn is the V40 ThinQ.

The hole in this theory is the presence of evidence against the judypn being the V40 ThinQ. According to its firmware files, it has dual rear cameras (both having optical image stabilisation). But from what we learnt previously, the LG V40 ThinQ will have a total of five cameras: three on the back and two on the front, with the front units supporting 3D facial recognition. Not helping the case is a tweet by mobile reporter Evan Blass which says the V40 ThinQ is codenamed storm, and not judypn.

Sadly, we have no definite evidence yet if this strange new LG ‘judypn’ phone is the V40 ThinQ or not. Whether it is the same or not, we know that it’ll be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, and sport a POLED display with a notch on the top and a resolution of 1440×3120 pixels. It’ll also have a 3,300mAh battery and support wireless charging. Let’s wait and watch to see how things unfold in the coming weeks.
