Samsung takes away Apple’s #1 spot, becomes leading smartphone maker

Apple, which was leading towards the end of 2023, was defeated by Samsung in the first quarter.

The first quarter of the year is over, and numbers are coming in to reflect on the smartphone sales that went through in this quarter. New data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that the first quarter of 2024 saw a downfall in the shipment of smartphones globally. The data also revealed which smartphone maker took the lead with maximum shipments this year. Turns out Samsung beat Apple to sell the most number of smartphones. According to the IDC report, smartphone shipments saw a 7.8 percent year-over-year decline, and a total of 289.4 million units were shipped. The trends reveal that Apple, which was leading towards the end of 2023, was defeated by Samsung in the first quarter. The data reveals a potential shift in the market. Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and Vivo, saw significant gains in this quarter. As per IDC, this could make the competition even more difficult for smaller brands.

The data further reveals that Xiaomi is currently seeing a positive growth trend. The last two years were difficult for the smartphone maker and now it is emerging stronger with growing sales and shipments. Transsion is also coming in close and making its presence felt in the Top 5 which also includes Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and Oppo.

Nabila Popal, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team believes that the market is now emerging from the dents of the last two years which were triggered by Covid-19. She further said, “Firstly, we continue to see growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices knowing they will hold onto their devices longer. Secondly, there is a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world.”
