Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus: Here’s what you get with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 platform
HIGHLIGHTS

While the Snapdragon 835 was unveiled a while back, Samsung’s new flagship devices show us what the platform is capable of

Earlier this year, Qualcomm unveiled its new Snapdragon 835 platform and revealed its details. However, at the time, it wasn’t clear as to what the platform was capable of. Now that the Samsung Galaxy S8 has been launched with the new platform, we now have a better understanding of the platform and what it has to offer. In case you are wondering why we are calling it a platform and not a processor or an SoC, read this.

To recall, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is one of the first SoCs to be manufactured using the 10nm FinFET process. The company claims that the new platform is 35 percent smaller than its previous flagship, and consumes 25 percent less power. It features an octa-core configuration consisting of Kryo 280 cores clocked up to 2.45GHz. There is also Snapdragon’s X16 modem, Hexagon 682 DSP, Adreno 540 GPU, support for mobile VR, and more.

With the new mobile platform, Qualcomm notes that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be able to deliver 25 percent increase in 3D graphics rendering performance. It also states that the platform enables the smartphone to play HDR movies as it supports object and scene based 3D audio along with 4K Ultra HD premium video.

In the camera department, the 12MP rear, and 8MP front camera of the Galaxy S8 is aided by the Spectra 180 ISP. Qualcomm says that this helps “enhance” still and video capture with advanced auto-focus technologies with true-to-life- colours and perceptual quantization video encoding. For security, the smartphone uses the Qualcomm Haven security platform, with which Qualcomm claims to offer enhanced biometrics and device attestation.

“We are proud to continue our long and productive collaboration with Samsung to help bring the most advanced mobile experiences, such as Gigabit LTE and mobile VR, to consumers with the new Samsung Galaxy S8,” stated Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Featuring a thin and light design with superior battery life, immersive multimedia, and exceptional photography with Gigabit LTE speeds, the Samsung Galaxy S8 powered by the Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform delivers the experiences today’s mobile users demand.”
