Rumour: Microsoft working on high-end Lumia 940, 940XL
HIGHLIGHTS

The devices will ship with Microsoft's Windows 10 platform and should launch later this year.

Since taking over from Nokia, Microsoft’s focus has essentially been on the budget and mid-range segment, until now. According to recent rumours, the company is working on two high-end smartphones and is likely to name them the Lumia 940 and 940XL. The rumours also say that the devices will have 5 inch and 5.7 inch displays.

Further, the rumoured specifications also include 24-25 MP rear cameras, 5 MP front cameras and support for a stylus (presumably for the phablet only). The phones will run on the Windows 10 platform. This has brought further speculations about the chipset that Microsoft will choose. Since Windows 10 supports both hexa-core and octa-core chipsets, speculations are that such chipsets may be fitted in the Lumia 940 and 940XL.

The high-end flagship phones aren’t the only phones Microsoft is working on though. The rumours also say that the company is looking at a successor to the Lumia 830, which will be called the 840 and will have a 13 MP Pureview camera and a 5MP front shooter. This one will also have a 5 inch display and a better SoC than the one on the Lumia 830 smartphone.

Even though these are simply rumours, the high end flagships would make a lot of sense for Microsoft. The company’s Lumia 930 has been somewhat underappreciated and hasn’t sold a lot. In addition, Microsoft needs a cutting edge flagship phone to take on its competitors.
