OnePlus 9 series in China to run on ColorOS 11

Global users to continue receiving OxygenOS updates

OnePlus 9 series launching on March 23 in India

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 9 series in China will run on ColorOS instead of the HydrogenOS. The OnePlus 9 series is set to launch on March 23 globally alongside the OnePlus Watch. The company has been teasing some key specifications of the upcoming phones and has confirmed that the ColorOS used by Oppo smartphones will run on the OnePlus 9 series.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Weibo to announce that the OnePlus 9 series will run on ColorOS 11 out-of-the-box. This is the first major development we’re hearing ever since the Research and Development (R&D) teams at OnePlus merged with Oppo, earlier this year. The OnePlus 9 series and the phones launched in China thereafter will run ColorOS while the global version of the phones will continue to run on OxygenOS out-of-the-box.

“After listening to their feedback and voices, our China market devices will now be using a customized version of ColorOS, tailored specifically for OnePlus smartphones, starting with the upcoming OnePlus 9 series,” said Gary C, OxygenOS Product Lead at OnePlus writes in a post on OnePlus Forums.

The company has not exactly revealed the reason as to why its phones won’t run the same software everywhere, but it likely has to do with the user base of ColorOS which is more than the people using HydrogenOS in China. “We truly believe this customized new operating system will bring our Chinese users a software experience that is better suited to their liking,” Gary adds.

For OnePlus users outside of mainland China, OnePlus smartphones will continue to run OxygenOS and the development will continue normally. We know that OnePlus anyway uses Oppo’s supply chain resources to manufacture its phones, but this new announcement further blurs the line between OnePlus and Oppo.

OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9R and OnePlus Watch are confirmed to launch on March 23 and here’s everything we know about it so far.
