OnePlus is now rolling out the stable OxygenOS 5.1.0 update for its OnePlus 5T and Oneplus 5 smartphones. Both the devices will be updated to the latest Android 8.1 Oreo and all OnePlus 5T users will get to use the iPhone X-like gestures, which were previously available only to beta testers for about three months. The update also brings the OnePlus 5T's security patch to April 2018 and comes with new optimisations for gaming mode and giving network priority for a gaming app running in the foreground. The launcher for both smartphones has also been tweaked. It now displays category tags in the app drawer search section and automatically names folders based on category. The update will be rolled out broadly in a few days and weighs 766 MB in size.
The gesture navigation feature is not yet available for the OnePlus 5 and it’s not known whether it might receive it in the future. The gestures remain the same when they were available in beta releases, one can enable them in settings and then swipe up from the middle to go to the home screen, and pausing for a second after swiping from the bottom for accessing recent apps. To go back up a menu, swipe up from the left or right side of the screen. The company’s upcoming OnePlus 6 smartphone is also said to come with gesture support and the feature could work more or less the same as mentioned above, but with an added feature of drawing symbols for booting apps directly.
Speaking of the OnePlus 6, the company has been aggressively promoting and teasing the launch of its next flagship smartphone. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau recently posted the first official camera samples taken from the device, which showcase the daylight and bokeh performance of the camera on the smartphone. Unsurprisingly, the meta-data from the images was stripped off so that no details of the device’s camera can be identified. The company has also now hinted that the OnePlus 6 could also be waterproof or at least come with some form of water-resistance. The company tweeted from its official handle, “Don’t you just hate it when you have to stop using your phone when it rains? So do we.” In case the company brings water resistance to the phone, it will be first for the brand. It’s not known yet whether the device will be IP67 or IP68 certified and as it is a flagship, one can expect the rating to not be any lower than IP67.
From what is confirmed so far, the OnePlus 6 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and come with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It will be the first model for the brand which sports 256GB internal storage and now possibly, water resistance. The device will retain the 3.5mm audio jack and is confirmed to feature a notch on top of its display. The company says that it will come with a compatibility mode, which will hide the notch whenever the phone is in landscape mode. The mode can also be set for individual apps and is said to work “flawlessly” with over 1000 top apps on the Play Store.
The company is also rumoured to launch a Bluetooth enabled version of its Bullets in-ear headphones, alongside the OnePlus 6. The ‘OnePlus Bullets Wireless’ headphone was spotted on the Bluetooth certification website with the model number BT31B and it’s registered to OnePlus. There are also reports, suggesting that there could also be another variant of the smartphone with a wooden finish on the rear panel. The phone is expected to launch running on OxygenOS based upon Android Oreo and official forum for the OnePlus 6 is also up.
