Motorola smartphones will get Android security patches, just not on time

Motorola smartphones will get Android security patches, just not on time
HIGHLIGHTS

Motorola has always promise "regular" updates, not timely ones.

Motorola has always touted the fact that its smartphones come with the promise of Android updates. However, whether these are timely updates seems to be another question. ArsTechnica reports that the company has said no to committing to monthly security patches for its smartphones. In a statement to the publication, the company clarified that testing and approvals that are needed, make it necessary for Motorola to deploy updates on a monthly basis. According to ArsTechnica, this results in the company’s phones being months behind its competitors as far as security patches are concerned. Motorola said it prefers to bundle security updates instead of delivering them monthly.

This is perhaps the first time Motorola has been called up on updates. The company’s smartphones usually come with the stock Android OS, and Motorola has maintained that this aids in delivering more updates over time. However, delivering timely updates is just as important as delivering the newest version, and Motorola seems to be paying less attention to user privacy by not not focusing on the same. To be clear, Motorola smartphones will receive the security patches that other phones get, but they won’t get it as fast as Nexus or Samsung smartphones.

Motorola recently launched the Moto Z smartphone in the US, which according to ArsTechnica, is already missing two months of security patches at launch. It worth noting that ArsTechnica's stories have been written based on US versions of Motorola devices, which are delivered through carriers. We have written to Motorola India to clarify whether the same applies to its devices sold in India as well and will update this story as soon as we hear back from them.
