Latest update for Samsung flagships improves call quality and more
The update is about 100MB in size, and is rolling out to the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 in India, reportedly fixing security and battery optimisation issues
Recent reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5, the 5.7-inch flagships from the South-Korean electronics manufacturer, are receiving an OTA update in India. The update is about 97MB in size, and includes call quality and security improvements, along with optimising battery usage.
The update is not showing up as an automatic notification, and has to be looked for manually, meaning that it has not been broadcasted widely, yet. Along with call quality optimisation and improvement of the smartphones’ security features, the “Battery usage optimisation” feature was first introduced in the previous update, and stops background app refresh, thereby conserving battery life. The security-oriented update includes Android’s general security patch for November 2015. To affirm in finer details, the firmware build numbers for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 are G928IDVU2AOK8 and N920GUBU2AOK3, respectively.
The updates also brings back the Optional Character Recognition (OCR) feature, which is a part of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5’s Smart Select feature. This feature, utilising the capabilities of the Samsung S-Pen, allows better recognition of letters and number when you make notes on the device’s screen, and lets you save the same as text, or an image file. The OCR was missing from the previous update, and Samsung has thankfully solved this issue. Another update that is reportedly solved by the same update is a UI bug that caused the device to slow down and lag for a few seconds.
An inconsistent bug for the most part, the UI glitch sent users back to the lock screen once the device was woken up and unlocked. The bug would reload the entire UI, causing the device to lag and stutter. While applications would not crash and you would not have lost any data, the glitch was a noticeable presence in otherwise excellent devices. The latest update is reportedly solving the same glitch, although confirmation of the same is yet to be attained.
The updates have come at a time when the world is waiting to receive the Android Marshmallow upgrade. With Samsung being one of the smartphone industry’s pioneers, we expect the device to receive the Marshmallow upgrades, some time soon.
