iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro may retain centre stage camera and dynamic island: Leaks

Apple’s iPhone 18 lineup has been making waves for months now. The latest rumours provide an early look at the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. One of the most talked-about features of the new iPhone lineup is the front camera and sensor design. According to rumours, Apple is expected to retain the same design of the centred pill cutout instead of placing it at the top-left corner of the screen. Rumours of a left-aligned camera design have been proven to be due to translation errors in previous rumours. Apple’s decision to retain the same design will help the company maintain a clean design while also allowing Face ID to work seamlessly.

Instead of changing the layout entirely, Apple may adjust how Face ID components are arranged. Some parts could be moved under the display. For example, the flood illuminator might sit beneath the screen toward the top-left, while the infrared sensor stays near the selfie camera. This setup would allow Apple to shrink the Dynamic Island without removing it, keeping its current position and functionality.

Industry analyst Ross Young supports this idea, noting that placing all Face ID parts under the screen is still a challenge. Because of this, Apple is expected to slowly reduce the cutout rather than switch to a single small camera hole. This approach could stay in place for several future iPhone models.

In terms of display, the iPhone 18 Pro is said to feature a 6.27-inch Super Retina display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could grow to a 6.86-inch Super Retina display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, in terms of design, both the devices are expected to get Face ID components placed under the display, possibly shrinking the Dynamic Island.

The smartphones are also expected to come with a triple camera setup similar to their predecessors. However, leaks suggest that the device might come with a variable aperture system, a new stacked image sensor, and enhanced low-light photography.

Both are rumoured to be fuelled by Apple’s A20 Pro silicon, based on TSMC’s 2nm process, coupled with RAM integration for enhanced efficiency and heat management. The Pro Max variant may come with a bigger 5,100mAh battery and support for Apple’s new C2 modem, which should offer enhanced 5G connectivity.
