India's telephone user base has increased to 926.53 million with telecom operators adding 9.47 million new subscribers in December last year. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said that the overall teledensity in the country is now 76.86 per cent. According to the TRAI, share of urban subscribers has dipped from 66.11 per cent to 65.97 per cent , while the share of rural subscribers has risen to 34.03 per cent in December.

The telecom regulatory body further revealed that the requests for number portability (MNP) increased to 29.24 million in December as against 25.83 million in November. Among all circles, Karanataka saw the highest 2.83 million MNP requests. Rajasthan followed with about 2.4 million MNP requests.

Idea Cellular emerged as the biggest gainer as it added 2.38 million new users, taking its total subscriber base to 106.38 million. Idea Cellular is followed by Uninor, which added 2.12 new users, increasing its total base to 36.30 million. Airtel managed to add some 0.96 million users in December last year. RCom and Vodafone added only 0.94 million and 0.9 million new subscribers respectively. Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Sistema Shyam added 0.1 million, 0.68 million and 0.51 million respectively in the month. State-run telecom operators, BSNL and MTNL added 0.75 million and 34,143 new users respectively in December. Their subscriber base remained 96.76 million and 5.68 million, respectively.
