HMD Global working on Android Pie update for Nokia 8, will bring new “camera experiences”

When the Android Pie update is be rolled out for the Nokia 8, it is said to bring ARCore support for the device as well.

HMD Global rolled out a new camera update for its Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.1 last month. The Nokia 8 received the camera update as well and the company’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, said that it will get another camera update with “new experiences” and ARCore support as a part of the Android 9 Pie update, which is expected to be rolled out for the smartphone soon. Sarvikas revealed the information in a reply to a users’ query on Twitter and also said that the Face Unlock feature is still being worked upon for the handset as well as the rest of the company’s products. 

As mentioned above, the company announced the Camera 9.0 update for its Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.1 smartphones. The new update enables switching between different aspect ratios and shooting functions, along with adjustments to parameters within different camera modes, such as the intensity of effects like Bokeh and Beautify. With the update, the three smartphones have also received Google Lens support, directly in the camera app. The feature can be used for finding information about whatever image is being captured in real time. The update also enables Google Motion with which a user can capture short videos for directly sharing to messaging services and social media platforms as a GIF.

Nokia recently launched the Nokia 6.1 Plus (review) and Nokia 5.1 Plus in India and both the handsets are a part of Google’s Android One program. The Nokia 6.1 Plus comes in a 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage variant, which is priced at Rs 15,999. The Nokia 5.1 Plus features 3GB RAM with 32GB of storage and Nokia said that it will announce the device’s official pricing in September when it will be made available in India. The company also announced that Android 9 Pie will be rolling out to eligible Nokia devices in early September, starting with the Nokia 7 Plus. 

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is the rebranded Nokia X6. In terms of specifications, it features a 5.8-inch Full HD+ notched display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and runs on Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. The dual-SIM device is backed by a 3060mAh battery that also supports Quick Charge 3.0. On the rear, it is equipped with a 16MP + 5MP dual-rear camera setup with Zeiss lenses while on the front, it sports a 16MP sensor. Both the cameras feature a f/2.0 aperture and support shooting in Bothie mode.

Coming to the Nokia 5.1, it is powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 octa-core SoC and sports a 5.86-inch HD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It also runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. The dual-SIM smartphone is backed by a 3060mAh battery. In terms of optics, the Nokia 5.1 Plus features a 13MP + 5MP dual-rear camera setup with a f/2.0 aperture. On the front, it features an 8MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and 80.4-degree angle of view.
