Xiaomi CEO explains it.

Xiaomi is one of the leading Chinese brands in India, with phones like the Redmi Note 3 enjoying unprecedented success here. Of multiple notable factors, what makes the phones so successful in Indian markets is the pricing, even beyond just good specifications. Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, stated that the company is currently fine with how things are going at the moment, and will most likely stay this way unless buyers would be willing to pay more.

Although water resistance may one of the most demanded features from consumers, the founder of Xiaomi feels differently about this. The CEO explained, even though waterproofing is good for minor water damages, but if the phone gets damaged from a drop or a bump, in most cases the waterproofing of the phone also gets damaged. He also adds that waterproofing a phone adds almost 20-30% to the cost of a device, so if a consumer is looking to pay this much more, there’s no use in making a waterproof phone.

Whether you agree with Xiaomi’s founder is a different thing, but if buying a waterproof phone is important for your needs, you’ll need to go for phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7, or the S7 Edge. Check here for a full list of waterproof devices to purchase. There have been some phones that also void warranty for being used underwater, even though they are certified waterproof.
