GSM operators see a marginal 0.47 percent growth in May: COAI
Vodafone added 9 lakh new subscribers followed by Idea Cellular which added 8.7 lakh new subscribers.
GSM operators such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and others have continued to see a marginal growth in the country with their subscriber base seeing a meagre 0.47 percent growth, says the latest figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The subscriber base grew to 66.75 crore in May 2013.
Vodafone emerged as the biggest gainer with addition of 9 lakh new subscribers, growing its subscriber base to 15.47 crore in May. Idea Cellular added 8.7 lakh new customers while Airtel added 6 lakh new customers . According to the COAI report, Airtel maintains its position as the largest GSM operator in the country with a subscriber base of 18.88 crore.
Aircel added 2.8 lakh subscribers while Uninor and Videocon added 1.5 lakh new customers each in May. State run teleco MTNL lost 90 thousand subscribers while BSNL did not acquire new customer, says the report. Private telco Loop also failed to add new customers.
“The GSM subscriber base increased by 3.11 million in May 2013, a 0.47% increase from previous month. Total number of GSM subscriber as of May 2013 stood at 667.56 million,” said COAI in its subscriber report.
