Google Pixel 3 December Android Security update fixes RAM management issue, optimises camera: Here’s how to download
HIGHLIGHTS

The December Pixel/Nexus Security Bulletin lists a whopping 13 ‘improvements’ for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 series of devices.

Google’s Pixel 3 series of smartphones are relatively bug-free when compared to the Pixel 2 phones. However, one major issue that bugged users was the aggressive RAM management on the Pixel 3 phones. Some users complained that the device force closed apps in the background while multitasking and seeing how the device runs on 4GB RAM, this was an irksome issue. Now, Google has rolled out the December Security patch for Android phones and this update fixes the ramped up memory management problem on the Google Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL, along with many other issues.

Improvements for the Pixel phones with December update

As per this month’s Pixel/Nexus Security Bulletin, there are a total of 13 patches, most of which will bring improvements to the Pixel 3 phones. Do note that there are no specifics of what most of these improvements do. However, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 lineup get “Improved camera capture performance” and the above-mentioned RAM management fix. The Pixel 3 phones also get adjusted autofocus behaviour, improved camera shutter performance, improved contouring on HDR colour on certain media apps, improved Android Auto compatibility, improved audio performance for when using Android Auto in certain vehicles, improved Always On Display triggering and more. For the device’s interaction with the Pixel Stand, there is now an improved notification visibility and improved hotword performance.

Additional, fixes include improved USB-C audio accessory detection on the Pixel 3 XL, while all Pixel phones get improved unlocking performance when using Bluetooth and adjusted volume behaviour when toggling Bluetooth. Some Pixel 3 phones were exhibiting flickering on the Ambient Display, which is most likely fixed with the Always-On display triggering improvement.

How to update

Google has posted factory images and OTA files of the new December update for the Pixel and Nexus devices. You can get the OTA files here and the factory images here, but click on the 'Link' for your device to download the files. The flashing instructions are stated on the websites only but do remember to take a backup of your device as flashing could wipe all your data.
