Facebook’s Android app now features Trending section
Facebook updates its Trending topics on desktop, will now feature on Facebook's Android app as well.
Facebook has announced an update in its Trending Topics section for desktop which will show five new sections that help users check out the latest news around them. The section will now also be available for its Android app users as well.
When users click on a trending topic, they will see five new sections providing more content and deeper context. In the Story and Near the Scene sections will provide context from people involved in or close to the event. The Live Feed section which shows a continuous stream of reactions from around the world and the Friends and Groups section will show you what your circle of friends think about the topic.
Facebook introduced the trending section almost an year back and the update section will be available to US users on the web and on the Android app as well. The social networking giant is planning to roll out the updated web version of Trending to other countries and bring the feature to the iOS app soon. With the new update Facebook is targeting rival Twitter, which holds the top spot when it comes to sharing real-time updates, reactions, etc.
"When people visit a trend or event they want an overview of what's going on, but [also] the reactionary feel," says Andrew Song, product manager of Trending Topics at Facebook. "Live Feed was really the right expression of that. [It shows] how people were reacting and how people are sharing without compromising the ability to get an overview."
Facebook's product managers state that the way trending topics are selected won't change and news sections will also remain the same.
"The way that your Trending topics are determined hasn't changed, and as always, only public posts and posts that you are in the audience for [like updates from friends or groups that you belong to] will be shown in Trending," states a Facebook product manager in a blog post.
