Alcatel Onetouch to resurrect the Palm brand?
Palm Brand acquired by Alcatel Onetouch, could make a comeback to smartphones.
Alcatel Onetouch has reportedly purchased the Palm brand and trademarks from HP. According to reports, Alcatel plans to resurrect the Palm brand.
First hints of the acquisition started appearing when the Palm.com website started redirecting users to mynewpalm.com, with the Palm logo and the text "coming soon" and "smart move" underneath. "Smart move," is also the slogan of Chinese smartphone manufacturer Alcatel Onetouch (a brand of Chinese electronics firm TCL).
According to documents dug up from the United States Trademark and Patent Office, HP owned Palm, Inc has already transferred ownership of the Palm name, trademarks, and logos to Wide Progress Global Limited, which is a shelf company represented by Nicolas Zibell who is also the President, Americas and Pacific, of Alcatel Onetouch and TCL.
Alcatel has not responded to reports of the acquisition, so it remains to be seen what are they planning to do with Palm brand? In the past, Alcatel Onetouch has produced smartphones with a model name of Palm so they could just be protecting their own branding. However, Alcatel could also use the Palm brand as part of a new line of smartphones or could even rebrand Alcatel Onetouch America as Palm which is very well respected brand in US.
Right now, Alcatel Onetouch is known for its budget smartphones and has presence largely in Asia. The come has sold well over 300 million handsets, but still has very little brand recognition in the US. We might come to know more about the company's plans at the upcoming CES and MWC 2015.
