Apple’s budget MacBook could arrive soon: Features, price and what we know so far
Reports of Apple working on a cheaper MacBook have been around for months now. Tech enthusiasts and analysts have been predicting a MacBook aimed at budget conscious users who still want a reliable device for their day to day work. Rather than chasing raw power, this laptop appears to be focused on everyday usability, portability, and a price tag that makes sense for students, first-time buyers, and casual users already invested in the Apple ecosystem. And as per latest reports, it could be here as soon as this month.

Apple’s budget MacBook could be here soon
Apple’s first wave of 2026 product announcements is expected to take place between January and May, according to YouTuber Matt Talks Tech. And the budget MacBook is expected to be a part of this early-year rollout. Moreover, the device could be announced through a quieter online event or a press release instead of a large-scale launch. While official confirmation is still pending, the timing fits Apple’s broader strategy of expanding its ecosystem early in the year with more approachable hardware.
What we know so far
The upcoming MacBook is rumoured to be Apple’s most affordable laptop yet, positioned clearly below the MacBook Air. It is expected to feature a compact display, likely around 12 inches, making it lightweight and easy to carry. Apple may also bring back brighter colour options such as blue, pink, and yellow, suggesting the device is being designed with students and casual users in mind.
To keep costs in check, Apple could skip its usual M-series chips for this model and instead use a mobile-class processor similar to those found in recent iPhones, such as the A18 or A18 Pro. This should be enough to handle everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, studying, and basic productivity without aiming at heavy professional workloads.
As for the pricing, a Bloomberg report had earlier said that the laptop is expected to be priced under $1,000 (around Rs 88,708). Now, recent rumours suggest the device could cost as low as $599-$699, making it significantly cheaper than the current M4 MacBook Air, which retails at $999 and drops to $899 with a student discount.
