Sam Altman renames himself Ram Altman on X after backlash over PC memory remarks, users spark frenzy with Happy Diwali wishes

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has changed his display name on X to ‘RAM Altman’ amid backlash over his recent statement over computer memory. The name change has also sparked a wave of memes, particularly among Indian users, who have been sharing ‘Happy Diwali’ wishes by playing on the reference to Lord Ram. The controversy began after Altman appeared on the Cheeky Pint podcast and questioned whether keeping large amounts of DRAM in personal computers was an efficient use of limited global memory supplies.

What Sam Altman said about DRAM

During the podcast, Altman was seen arguing that the memory installed in personal computers often remains unused for long periods. He stated that, from a global resource allocation perspective, having large amounts of DRAM sitting in individual computers was not ideal when supplies were constrained.

In response to a user on X who asked him to change his name to ‘Ram Altman’, Altman agreed, but clarified that he genuinely wants the world to have more memory and for people to be able to install as much RAM as they want in their computers. He added that it was ‘annoying’ to see his earlier comments taken out of context, saying he had long been advocating for a significant increase in global memory production. Soon after he changed his name, Indian users started posting Happy Diwali wishes on the context of Lord Rama.

He stated that cloud data centres can make better use of available memory by serving multiple users. Altman also challenged the argument that running open-source AI models locally would ease the pressure on data centres.

He acknowledged that memory prices and supply remain a problem, adding that the market’s usual mechanisms were not working as expected. He also spoke about OpenAI’s efforts to develop its own chips, build data centre capabilities and explore robotics.

Elon Musk reacts as X users turn it into a meme

Altman’s comments drew a response from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who wrote on X, “The people deserve to have their RAM too!” without directly naming the OpenAI chief. Musk also replied “Seriously” to a post insulting Altman over his remarks.

Meanwhile, Altman’s new display name has become meme material on X. Indian users have been connecting ‘RAM Altman’ with the name Ram, sharing festive greetings and wishing others a ‘Happy Diwali’. What started as a debate about computer memory has turned into an unexpected mix of tech jokes and Diwali memes.

Memory shortage puts pressure on device prices

The discussion comes as rising memory costs continue to affect consumer electronics. Smartphone brands such as OnePlus, Samsung and Oppo have revised prices amid higher component costs.

PC makers are also facing pressure, with Intel warning of a weaker market and HP reporting a sharp increase in memory’s share of laptop production costs. Gaming consoles have seen price hikes too, with Sony increasing PS5 prices and Microsoft raising Xbox Series X prices in the US.
