Apple has announced Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI. This move comes as the company confirms that its senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, John Giannandrea, is stepping down and will serve as an advisor before retiring in the spring of 2026. Subramanya, an AI researcher with experience at Google and Microsoft, will report to Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering. Subramanya will lead key areas, including Apple Foundation Models, ML research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. These areas are important as the tech giant continues to expand its AI capabilities and prepare new Apple Intelligence features for upcoming products.
Apple calls Amar Subramanya as a “renowned AI researcher.” He spent 16 years at Google, where he was heading engineering for Google’s Gemini Assistant. Also, he had worked at Microsoft as corporate vice president of AI. According to his LinkedIn profile, he holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communication Engineering from Bangalore University and a PhD from the University of Washington.
At Apple, Subramanya will be leading important areas, including Apple Foundation Models, ML research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. According to the iPhone maker, Subramanya’s expertise in “AI and ML research and in integrating that research into products and features will be important to Apple’s ongoing innovation and future Apple Intelligence features.”
Apple says that the latest leadership changes will help the tech giant continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
