It was during his graduation years, he joined OpenAI as a research intern in May 2016.
OpenAI created quite a stir when it announced its new GPT-4o, just before Google was going to host its annual I/O. A lot of crazy features were showcased and announced, and a lot of people are calling it revolutionary. GPT 4o was the first product from OpenAI’s Omni team and they did a great job with it. Sam Altman himself took to X (formerly Twitter) and said, “GPT-4o would not have happened without the vision, talent, conviction, and determination of @prafdhar over a long period of time. that (along with the work of many others) led to what I hope will turn out to be a revolution in how we use computers.”

Who is Prafulla Dhariwal?
Prafulla Dhariwal hails from Pune, India and is currently leading the OpenAI Omni team. Dhariwal is backed by an excellent track record of scores throughout his educational journey. Let’s take a look at his educational background which led him to a spot at OpenAI.
Dhariwal’s Educational Background
He pursued PCM in class 12th and scored 295 out of 300. He then went ahead to take the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MT-CET) and scored 190, after which he took the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE-Mains) exam where he scored 330 out of 360. He even got the National Talent Search Scholarship by India and even won gold medals at the International Astronomy Olympiad in China. All this happened in India which eventually led him to pursue a Bachelor’s in Computer Science with Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Here also he scored a GPA of 5.0.
How did he make it to OpenAI and help them make GPT-4o?
It was during his graduation years, that he joined OpenAI as a research intern in May 2016 and then there was no looking back. He has made some significant contributions to OpenAI’s success. He has not only worked on GPT-4o but on DALL-E 2 image generation tool as well. He was a key player behind GPT-4o and even Sam Altman acknowledged it.
