SEL has showcased a three-fold touch OLED display at the Display Innovation Trade show 2014.
Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) Co Ltd has showcased an OLED display that can be folded in three and can be bent more than 100,000 times.
The display was unveiled at Display Innovation 2014, a trade show that was held from Oct 29 to 31, 2014, in Yokohama City, Japan. The OLED "Foldable Display," spans 8.7 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels with a pixel density of 254 ppi. A c-axis aligned oxide semiconductor has been used for its backplane. There is no information when the display will be seen in an actual product. However, the display's possibilities are endless and it could be seen in future e-readers as well as tablets.
Earlier in June, SEL and Nokia had announced a similar foldable display with a screen size of 5.9 inches at the SID 2014 academic conference. The display measured 5.9 inches with 720 pixels resolution, but had no touch support. The display could be folded in two like a book as well as a “three-fold” display.
In August, electronics giant Samsung also filed a patent for a display that bends in half. The display can be embedded in the style of the company's existing smartphones, according to reports.
