OpenAI officially starts testing group chats in ChatGPT: Here’s how this feature works

OpenAI is officially testing a new group chats feature in ChatGPT, expanding the chatbot beyond one-on-one conversations. After early hints and leaked previews surfaced recently, the company has now confirmed that the feature is rolling out as a pilot program. For now, users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan can try it on both the mobile app and the web. The rollout includes Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. OpenAI describes this feature as new way to “collaborate with friends, family, or coworkers and ChatGPT in the same conversation.” Keep reading to know how the group chats feature works.

To get started, users can tap the people icon in the top-right corner of any new or existing chat. Adding someone to an existing chat generates a separate copy of the conversation, making sure that the original remains private and unchanged. You can invite between one and twenty people via a shareable link, and anyone in the chat can share that link on to bring in more participants. When joining or creating a group chat for the first time, users are prompted to set up a short profile, including a name, username, and photo, helping everyone to know who’s included.

“We’ve also taught ChatGPT new social behaviors for group chats. It follows the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the context of the group conversation,” OpenAI explains. If you need a response immediately, mentioning “ChatGPT” in a message signals it to engage. The AI can also react to messages with emojis.

ChatGPT responses count toward the message limits of the user it’s addressing, though rate limits do not apply to messages exchanged between human participants. Also, users have control over group settings. By tapping the participant icons, you can rename the chat, adjust membership, or mute notifications. Each group can include custom instructions that tailor how ChatGPT communicates.

It’s important to note that group chats remain separate from personal conversations, and ChatGPT’s memory does not apply within them.
