OpenAI is now rolling out a fresh update for the premium ChatGPT subscribers, giving them more control over how the bot responds to complex questions. The feature, which the company calls Thinking mode time options, allows users to choose between different response speeds and depending on their needs.

Until now, premium users had no say over how long it took ChatGPT to provide detailed answers. The default setting, Extended, often produced thorough but slow responses. With the latest update, ChatGPT Plus and Business users can now choose between Standard, which aims to balance speed and intelligence, and Extended, which is better suited for more complex queries.
ChatGPT Pro users, on the other hand, benefit from additional flexibility. They can select from four modes: Light for quick, surface-level answers, Standard for balanced responses, Extended for in-depth reasoning, and Heavy, which prioritises the most detailed answers even if they take longer to generate. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, this update was created in response to subscriber feedback requesting faster responses without sacrificing quality.
It should be noted that time controls are only accessible to ChatGPT web users. OpenAI has not yet revealed a timeline for Android or iOS support. Once selected, the preferred setting remains active for future conversations associated with a user’s account.
Along with the update, OpenAI has released a redesigned personalisation page. This new hub combines several features, including custom instructions, memory settings, and personality options, into a single interface. Users can now select one of five personas based on their task or mood: Default, Cynical, Robot, Listener, or Nerd.
