OnePlus sees sharpest decline as India’s smartphone market momentum weakens: Report

India’s smartphone market showed signs of fatigue in 2025, with the overall pace of market growth slowing down despite a marginal increase throughout the year. A recent report shows that the December quarter saw a 5 per cent decline in shipments compared to the same period over the last year. The decline is said to be a result of reduced consumer demand and longer replacement cycles. Among the top brands, OnePlus had the biggest drop. Its market share fell by 30 per cent compared to last year because more companies are now competing in the high-end phone market. While Vivo retained leadership and Samsung maintained steady earnings, Motorola emerged as a fast-growing challenger. Apple stayed in the top five, even as budget-focused brands faced mounting pressure nationwide.

Reports show that the market grew slightly over the whole year. However, in the last three months of 2025, it fell by 5 per cent, showing a weak period after many years of steady growth. Analysts linked the drop to slower replacement cycles and fewer urgent upgrades. Many consumers chose to keep their existing devices longer instead of buying new ones, especially in the mid-range and premium segments.

OnePlus saw a significant decline among the top brands, with its market share dropping roughly 30 per cent year-on-year by the end of 2025. This highlighted rising competition and weaker demand for upgrades in the premium segment where the brand has a strong presence. There were also rumours in early 2026 suggesting OnePlus India’s potential exit from the market. However, these claims were later officially declined by OnePlus India, confirming that business operations continue as normal.

Vivo retained the top spot in the smartphone market in India by the number of phones sold. The brand did well because of the offline stores, phones in different price ranges, and new models. Along with that, Samsung also remained one of the top brands. Even though the market saw fewer shipments overall, Samsung kept steady earnings.

Motorola was one of the biggest winners, as the phone shipments for the company grew almost 2.4 times during the year, making it one of the fastest-growing brands in India. It offers phones in many price ranges, which helped it attract more customers.

Apple maintained its position in the top five brands as it continued to witness good demand for its flagship smartphones. Moreover, India emerged as the fourth-largest market globally for the Cupertino-based company. On the other hand, Poco and Realme experienced a decline in their shipments, which indicated a slowdown in the budget smartphone market. Nothing special emerged with over 45 per cent growth, thanks to its distinctive smartphone designs and affordable price tags.
