Moon will be closest to Earth on this date in October: Here’s when and how you can watch it

The first supermoon of 2025 is set to light up the skies on October 6, and it’s not just any full moon. This one’s called the Harvest Moon, and it will appear bigger and brighter than the usual lunar display, as it will come closest to Earth on this day. Interestingly, there will be two more supermoons gracing the night sky this year – first on November 5, 2025 and second on December 4, 2025. Each of these moons will coincide with the moon’s perigee, creating a visual treat similar to October’s event.

However, the October 6 supermoon is more significant for two reasons: it’ll be the first supermoon of 2025, and secondly, it’s known as the Harvest moon. Here’s all you need to know about the first upcoming supermoon.

Supermoon 2025: When and where to watch

According to EarthSky, the moon will reach its peak fullness at 11:47 p.m. IST on October 6, 2025. The best time to watch will be just after moonrise, when the moon is low on the horizon and appears especially large due to a visual effect known as the moon illusion.

What makes this supermoon so special

The October full moon this year aligns closely with the moon’s perigee — the point in its elliptical orbit when it is nearest to Earth. This makes it a supermoon, a phenomenon where the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it’s at its farthest point, or apogee.

Notably, the moon revolves around Earth in an elliptical orbit. That means the moon’s distance from Earth changes throughout the month. When a full moon coincides with the closest orbital point (perigee), it is scientifically called a perigee-syzygy, or more popularly, a supermoon.

This orbital coincidence happens roughly every 13 months, but having three supermoons in consecutive months is relatively rare and makes 2025 a treat for lunar enthusiasts.

Why is it called the Harvest Moon this year

Traditionally, the Harvest Moon is the full moon that falls closest to the autumnal equinox. While that usually occurs in September, this year’s October moon happens to land nearer to the equinox, earning it the seasonal title instead.

The name “Harvest Moon” dates back to a time when moonlight was vital for farmers harvesting crops late into the evening. The moonrise happens shortly after sunset for several nights in a row, providing a stretch of extended light.
