Missed PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline? Here’s how you can still do it by paying the same fees

HIGHLIGHTS

PAN–Aadhaar linking is still possible even after the December 31, 2025 deadline, as the income tax e-filing portal continues to show the linking option.

The portal currently displays the same penalty of Rs 1,000, with no increase in fees for late linking so far.

Experts advise completing the process immediately, as there is no official extension and the portal may be closed at any time.

Missed PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline? Here’s how you can still do it by paying the same fees

The deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar has been long passed, as the official deadline to do so was December 31, 2025, and as many taxpayers across the country failed to meet it, they have a lot of anxiety and chaos. PAN is needed to file income tax returns, to open bank accounts, to receive refunds, and to conduct most of the day-to-day financial transactions. Non-meeting of the deadline created a fear that PAN numbers may become inoperative, thereby disrupting the smooth flow of financial transactions. Though the government has not issued any formal announcement or clarification yet on the issue after the expiry of the December 31, 2025 deadline, there is some respite for those who are yet to get the work done. Even after December 31, 2025, the income tax e-filing portal still reflects the option for PAN-Aadhaar link. This means late linking is possible as of now. The portal also continues to flash the earlier amount of penalty, thereby retaining the process similar to what the users were trying to accomplish after the deadline.

We’ve recently noticed that the e-Filing portal still has the Link Aadhaar option live, so we decided to investigate further. The results were astonishing, as the page still shows the penalty of Rs 1,000 for linking PAN to Aadhaar. There is no variation in the amount displayed on the payment page. We expect that following the payment of this penalty, the taxpayers will be allowed to continue the process of PAN-Aadhaar linkages in the normal manner. The procedures are still simple and friendly. The taxpayers have to mention the PAN and Aadhaar details, check the entry, then pay the penalty, and finally send the application. After this, a confirmation message pops up, and the linking status can then be accessed.

It is worth mentioning that we could only verify the availability of this facility on the pre-login page of the income tax e-filing portal since we have already linked our PAN card and Aadhaar card. Therefore, we could not personally check how this facility is reflected after the log-in, since this is not possible in our case due to the linking of our PAN card and Aadhaar card.

Experts also suggest that taxpayers must not wait any longer, as there is no official announcement from the government about the extension of the dates for the PAN-Aadhaar link, as the portal can be turned off anytime. As the portal is currently functioning, it gives an opportunity to the users to avoid issues like inoperative PAN, delay in tax refunds, or problems while filing returns. Completing the linking process now will ensure seamless banking, investments, salary credits, and tax-related work over the coming months.
