Meta is reportedly laying off several hundred employees as part of a restructuring effort that affects multiple teams across the company. The job cuts will impact departments including sales, recruiting and the Reality Labs hardware division, reports Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. The layoffs are said to affect employees in the US as well as other international locations. The total number of impacted employees is expected to remain below 1,000. To prepare for the layoffs, some members of the Reality Labs division were reportedly asked to work remotely on Wednesday.

‘Teams across Meta regularly restructure or implement changes to ensure they’re in the best position to achieve their goals,’ a Meta spokesperson was quoted in the report. ‘Where possible, we are finding other opportunities for employees whose positions may be impacted.’

The news comes at a time when Meta is heavily investing in AI. The company has been among the most aggressive tech firms when it comes to spending on AI infrastructure and development.

Meta projected record capital expenditures this year, potentially reaching as much as $135 billion. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also earlier said the company plans to spend around $600 billion on infrastructure projects in the US by 2028.

This is not the first round of job cuts at Meta this year. In January, Reality Labs reduced its workforce by more than 1,000 employees as the company shifted its focus towards AI-powered wearable devices, while moving away from some of its metaverse-focused projects.
