HIGHLIGHTS

Apple's MM1 will provide a new method for using AI-generated data.

It is a new method for training multimodal models using synthetic data

Apple could also be working on Siri 2.0 which would have a lot of AI capabilities.

Like in most cases, Apple seems to be late to the AI party. However, the California-based tech company seems to be making up for the lost time by pulling its socks up. There has been news all around about Apple’s work in the direction of AI to stand. CEO Tim Cook had previously informed his investors that Apple would soon make a significant announcement in the space of AI. No official revelation has been made but some Apple researchers have informed that Apple’s MM1 AI model is in the works. There could also be Siri 2.0 which would have a lot of AI capabilities.

There could be some weight to these rumours, a preprint research paper, called Methods, Analysis, and Insights from Multimodal LLM Pre-training, has informed that Apple’s MM1 AI model will provide a new method for using AI-generated data and labels to speed up the training process of new models. It is also expected that this AI model could possibly power the new Siri 2.0.

The MM1 is a new method for training multimodal models using synthetic data that includes images and text. As per the researchers behind this, it speeds up performance and reduces the number of follow-up prompts. From the looks of it, Apple’s MM1 AI model seems like a larger group of AI models. The largest one among these could be around 30 billion parameters. Now this is substantially lower than its competitors like GPT-4 and Claude 3 Opus which have the trillion-plus parameters. However, researchers say that it will match the benchmark with its improved efficiency.

The MM1 model will not rely on a single concept and instead is said to combine different types of training data and model architectures. Hence, it promises great performance. It uses higher image resolution encoders, a different approach to pre-training and labeling, and also uses that data mix to improve overall performance from a single prompt.

So Apple has definitely become more serious about its AI ambitions. Will MM1 power Siri 2.0? We don’t know for sure, but all the features discussed above do give us a hint of which way Apple might take Siri in the future.
