Instagram finally launches official iPad app after years of user demand

After years of requests and demand, Meta has finally released the official Instagram app. Previously, users had to rely on the stretched-out iPhone version or the browser, but now they can download the photo-sharing platform’s dedicated app directly from the App Store.

“Today, we’re excited to announce we’re bringing Instagram to iPad. People have asked for this for a while, and we’ve taken the time to design an experience that optimizes your favorite parts of Instagram for a bigger screen,” the company stated on its post.

In terms of layout, the new app places Reels in the centre, allowing you to quickly access short form video and take advantage of the larger screen. The Stories are displayed at the top, as is the usual layout, while the left sidebar provides quick access to feeds, DMs, Explore, Search, and notifications.

The Feed option on iPad is also organised with the users having an option to switch between All (a mix of recommended posts and accounts you follow), Friends (updates from mutuals), and Latest (a chronological feed). These sections can also be reordered based on preference.

The company also states that the Instagram app design has been reworked. For instance, comments now appear alongside Reels instead of over them, and the messaging interface lets you keep an eye on all active chats while viewing a conversation.

Despite being around for nearly 15 years, Instagram had long dismissed an iPad app, with company head Adam Mosseri repeatedly downplaying the demand. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the app was finally in development, and today’s release makes that official.

Supported devices

All the iPads that run on iPadOS 15.1 or later will be able to download the Instagram application using it. The company also confirmed that the application is free on the App Store and the new tablet design will be coming soon to Android.
