Google’s AirDrop feature has a bug, here is what users report

Google recently announced that its Quick Share feature can now work with Apple’s AirDrop, letting Android and iPhone users share files more easily with each other. Google stated that it tested the feature with the help of independent security experts. The testing included threat modelling, security design and privacy reviews, and internal penetration tests to find and fix vulnerabilities. However, despite all these measures, it seems one issue slipped through.

The problem was first reported by a user named JayMZ on Google’s support forum, reports Android Police. After updating to the latest Quick Share extension that enables AirDrop support, the user noticed that their Pixel 10 lost Wi-Fi connection as soon as they opened the Quick Share sharing menu.

“It will not only disconnect me from my Wifi, but if I enter the Wifi menu while the QuickShare menu is still open, the list of networks is completely empty as if nothing was there. If I switch Wifi off and on with the QuickShare menu still open, only my home network will show up in the list, but I can’t connect to it,” JayMZ wrote. The user also mentioned that their Wi-Fi started working normally again only after removing the update.

Other users have reported similar issues. On Reddit, one person said, “Experiencing the same issue,” while another added, “It’s clearly a software bug. I just installed the extension update and it happens with me as well.”

The bug was also submitted to Google’s IssueTracker on November 22 but was closed the same day. IssueTracker engineers suggested taking the issue to Google’s support forum, while the support forum team directed users back to IssueTracker. This back-and-forth shows that Google is aware of the problem, though it’s not clear if a fix is already in the works.
