Google to pay $30 million to settle YouTube privacy lawsuit over kids’ data

Google has agreed to pay $30 million to resolve a lawsuit that accused the tech giant of violating the privacy of children using YouTube. The lawsuit claimed that the tech giant collected personal information from kids without parental consent and used it to show them targeted ads. A preliminary settlement for the case was filed on Monday night in a federal court in San Jose, California. The settlement still needs approval from US Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen, reports Reuters.

The lawsuit was brought forward by the parents and guardians of 34 children. They accused Google of breaking several state laws by letting YouTube content creators use nursery rhymes, cartoons and other content to attract young viewers, which then allowed Google to collect their data.

In January, Van Keulen dismissed claims against several content providers, including Hasbro, Mattel, Cartoon Network and DreamWorks Animation, saying there was no proof linking them directly to Google’s data collection. Mediation began the following month, according to the report.

The proposed settlement would apply to US children under the age of 13 who watched YouTube between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020. Lawyers for the plaintiffs estimate that between 35 million and 45 million children could be part of the class.

If only 1 percent to 2 percent of eligible families file claims, which is typical in cases like this, each claimant could receive about $30 to $60 before legal fees and other costs are deducted. The lawyers representing the families also plan to request up to $9 million from the settlement amount to cover legal expenses.
