Four shortlisted nonprofits of India will each be awarded with whopping Rs. 3 crore.

Google has launched ‘Google Impact Challenge in India’, inviting inviting Indian nonprofits to tell how they would use technology to improve people’s lives. Four shortlisted nonprofits will each be awarded with a Rs. 3 crore (around $500,000) Global Impact Award and technical assistance from Google to bring their projects to life.

Registered Indian nonprofits can apply online until September 5 at g.co/indiachallenge. A list of 10 best projects will be announced on October 21 followed by public voting online for their favourites.

“On October 31, I’ll join Ram Shriram, Jacquelline Fuller, Anu Aga and Jayant Sinha in Delhi to hear the 10 finalists pitch live. As judges, we’ll select three awardees based on their potential impact, scalability and ingenuity. We’ll also announce the winner of the Fan Favorite, according to your vote,” writes Nikesh Arora, Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer at Google, while announcing the competition.

Google’s Impact Challenge team will be holding “Office Hours” on a Google Hangout on 28th August, from 12-2 p.m to respond to questions about the Challenge.

“On the eve of India’s independence day, we’re celebrating the spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship of the world’s largest democracy by spotlighting the best local nonprofits that are using technology to make the world better,” adds Nikesh Arora.

Google says the Impact Challenge was created to identify and support innovators who are looking to use technology to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

“We are looking for NGOs who use any type of technology. Technology can come in many forms, from monitoring clean water wells with hardware sensors, improving education through big data analysis, or improving the lives of older people through digital literacy trainings,” explains Google.
