HIGHLIGHTS

The new Chrome 42 update, brings push notifications from sites even when users close the page.

Google's Chrome 42 update brings push notifications to everyone. The release will allow websites to send alerts even when the browser is not open. The update is available for Windows, Mac and Linux browsers and can be accessed via Chrome’s download page.

Chrome 42 update brings two new APIs- Push API and Notifications API that will let websites send notifications to their users even after page is closed. Google adds that websites will be able to send notifications only after a user approves it. Once a website is approved, developers can use Google Cloud Messaging to contact a service worker, who will run the JavaScript and implement the notifications. The release has user visible notifications that includes a “Site Settings” button through which users can disable notifications easily.

Google also plans to remove Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI) plugins from Chrome in order to improving the browser’s speed, security and stability, as well as decrease the complexity in the code base. in Chrome 42 the internet giant has disabled the NPAPI support by default.

Google says that Chrome 42 is a “performance-focused build.” Apart from Push notifications, the Chrome 42 update also brings stability and performance improvement with 45 security fixes. Users can check out more details about the Chrome 42 stable release via the Chrome Releases blog.

Earlier this month Google shut down 200 ad-injecting extensions for its Chrome browser which exposed nearly 14 million users to deceptive practices or malicious software. The internet giant has also incorporated new techniques to catch any new or updated extensions that have similar malware.
