‘My concern was about Sam saying one thing to one person and completely the opposite to another person,’ said Murati during her testimony, according to Firstpost. She also said Altman was ‘creating chaos’ and, at times, was deceptive with her and other executives.
For those unaware, Murati briefly became CEO of OpenAI in 2023 after Altman was temporarily removed by the board of directors. However, Altman returned to the role soon after.
During the testimony, Murati said she believed the company was at risk during that period. ‘OpenAI was at catastrophic risk of falling apart,’ Murati said. ‘I was concerned about the company completely blowing up.’
Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, filed the lawsuit in 2024 against OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman.
Musk claims that OpenAI was originally created to develop AI for public benefit instead of profit. According to him, the company moved away from that mission after creating a for-profit division and receiving major investment from Microsoft.
Musk is reportedly seeking damages between $134 billion and $150 billion. He has also asked for leadership and structural changes at OpenAI, including removing Altman as CEO and restoring the company’s nonprofit status.
