Elon Musk’s X suspends legacy Twitter handle amid rebrand push? Here’s what we know

Amid the global criticism about generating explicit images through GrokAI, X has silently suspended the long running Twitter handle. This comes after two years of shifting the domain and has now sparked fresh discussion around the platform’s identity. The users who are attempting to visit the @Twitter account are now shown a suspension notice stating that the profile violated platform rules.

The move gained attention all over the internet when the screenshots of suspension went viral on Friday, prompting jokes and commentary about X effectively shutting down a piece of its own history. While some users noted that similar restrictions may have appeared earlier, the suspension has now become widely visible.

Interestingly, X and Elon Musk have not made any official statement about the move. Musk has not even addressed the suspension on his personal account. X’s AI chatbot Grok suggested the move could be part of a broader effort to phase out legacy branding tied to the Twitter name.

For many users, the suspension carries a symbolic weight. Even after the 2023 rebrand, a significant portion of the platform’s user base continues to refer to X as Twitter, and the disappearance of the original handle is being seen as another step away from the service’s past.

For the unversed, Musk has formally renamed Twitter to X in July 2023, months after acquiring the company for $44 billion. He argued at the time that the original name no longer reflected the platform’s expanded capabilities beyond short text posts. The “X” branding aligns with Musk’s long-standing affinity for the letter, which appears across several of his ventures, including SpaceX, xAI and Tesla’s Model X.

The suspension also comes against the backdrop of ongoing trademark disputes related to the Twitter name. In recent months, a US-based startup has challenged X’s ownership of Twitter-related trademarks, arguing that the brand has been abandoned. Musk’s company has contested those claims in court, maintaining that the Twitter brand still holds value.
