Apple set to bring these accessibility features later this year

Apple is doubling down on accessibility with a fresh set of features coming later this year to iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and the Vision Pro headset. Aimed at helping users with vision, hearing and learning challenges, these updates are designed to make Apple’s devices even more inclusive.

“At Apple, accessibility is part of our DNA,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “Making technology for everyone is a priority for all of us, and we’re proud of the innovations we’re sharing this year. That includes tools to help people access crucial information, explore the world around them, and do what they love.”

Here’s a look at what’s on the way.

Accessibility Nutrition Labels on the App Store

Accessibility Nutrition Labels introduces a new section to App Store product pages. These labels will let users know if an app supports features like VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, captions and more. This way, people can check if an app suits their accessibility needs before downloading.

Magnifier app for Mac

The Magnifier app, already available on iPhone and iPad, is coming to Mac. ” The Magnifier app for Mac connects to a user’s camera so they can zoom in on their surroundings, such as a screen or whiteboard. Magnifier works with Continuity Camera on iPhone as well as attached USB cameras, and supports reading documents using Desk View,” Apple explained in a blogpost. With customised views, users can even adjust brightness, contrast and colour filters.

Braille Access

Apple has introduced Braille Access, a feature that turns iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro into a full braille note-taker.

Accessibility Reader

A new Accessibility Reader will be available across Apple devices. It will help users with low vision or dyslexia read more easily.

Live Captions on Apple Watch

Apple Watch is getting a new set of accessibility features for users who are deaf or hard of hearing, including Live Listen controls and real-time Live Captions. “Live Listen turns iPhone into a remote microphone to stream content directly to AirPods, Made for iPhone hearing aids, or Beats headphones. When a session is active on iPhone, users can view Live Captions of what their iPhone hears on a paired Apple Watch while listening along to the audio,” Apple said.

Enhanced view with Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro will get improved Zoom and VoiceOver features. With updates to Zoom, users will be able to magnify everything in view using the main camera. Meanwhile, for VoiceOver users, Live Recognition in visionOS will use on-device machine learning to describe surroundings, find objects, read documents and more.
