Apple releases iOS 11.1 with new emojis, 3D Touch for multi-touch and other bug fixes
Apple's updated iOS 11.1 brings over 70 new emojis and restores the 3D Touch support for multitasking. The update also brings improvements to accessibility options and bug fixes to some known issues.
Apple has released the iOS 11.1 update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The updated software brings over 70 new emojis to Apple's mobile operating system and also brings back the 3D Touch gesture for multitasking. Other additions include improvements to accessibility options and bug fixes to some known issues.
The biggest addition with iOS 11.1 is the addition of new emojis, which were first showcased earlier this year and were detailed by the company last month. The new emojis bring new expressions, gender-neutral characters, clothing options, food types, animals and mythical creates. Apple says the new emojis are adapted from approved characters in Unicode 10 and reveal every detail. "iOS 11.1 will also include characters announced on World Emoji Day like Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breastfeeding, Zombie, Person in Lotus Position and new food items such as Sandwich and Coconut," the company said in a release.
This improved emojis will only be available to those running iOS 11.1 update on their iPhones and iPads. The emojis can be sent and received by those with iOS 11.1, while those running older operating system will see broken emoji characters. The new emojis will also be available as part of keyboard only with iOS 11.1.
Apple is also bringing back the 3D Touch multitasking gesture for those using iPhone 6s or later. With the update, users of iPhone 6s or newer model can either touch the left edge of the display with pressure to enter app switcher or switch between apps by pulling with pressure from the left to right. The gestures, however, work differently on iPhone X.
Apple has made it easier to access reachability by double tapping the home button. Users can lower the screen for easy reach in more places and Apple has made the animation smoother when users tap the top of the display to reach the top of the window. The update is currently available from the Settings app on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
