Apple iOS 26.1 beta 1: What’s new

One of the biggest additions in the beta appears in the Maps app. Apple has introduced a Suggested Places feature that recommends locations based on trending spots nearby and your recent searches. This section could also eventually display ads once Apple begins integrating advertising into Maps. Businesses will reportedly be able to purchase ads that appear in search results and within the Suggested Places section.

Another important change is the return of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages between iPhone and Android devices. Apple had earlier tested the feature in the iOS 26.4 beta but removed it before the public release. In iOS 26.5 beta 1, the feature is back and enabled by default, reports MacRumors. Users can find a toggle for End-to-End Encryption in the Messages section of the Settings app.

Apple is also continuing work on interoperability features in the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act. These include proximity pairing for third-party accessories, allowing devices like earbuds to pair with an iPhone simply by bringing them close to it.

The beta also includes Live Activities syncing with third-party wearables, improvements to accessory connections over USB-C, and a new option for choosing how many message attachments to transfer when switching from an iPhone to an Android device.
