Apple may soon rely more heavily on Google’s AI technology to improve Siri and other features. According to a report by The Information, Google has given Apple complete access to the Gemini model within its own data centres. This access is said to allow Apple to study how the model works and use it to build smaller AI systems that can run directly on Apple devices. The iPhone-maker is expected to create AI models that can run on its devices without the need to connect them to the internet.

The report explains that Apple can use Gemini to perform complex tasks and provide high-quality responses along with the reasoning steps it used. Apple can then take those answers and reasoning patterns and use them to train smaller AI models.
This process is known as distillation. In simple terms, a powerful large model like Gemini acts as a teacher. Apple’s smaller models learn from its responses and internal logic, allowing them to achieve similar results while using far less computing power.
The report also says Apple can edit Gemini as needed to ensure it answers queries in a way that Apple wants. However, Apple has been facing issues because Gemini has mainly been trained for chatbot conversations and coding tasks, which do not always match the specific types of interactions Apple wants
Gemini is expected to play a key role in the future of Siri. Apple is reportedly planning a smarter version of the assistant which could rely on Gemini AI. The upgraded Siri is expected to be more like other AI chatbots, and could answer complex questions, summarise information, understand uploaded documents, generate stories, offer emotional support and do much more.
