Mortal Kombat returns to its roots; looks like it’s good news for fans of MK II

Warner Bros. has announced that their newly formed NetherRealm Studios is working on the next game in the Mortal Kombat universe which will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Judging by the announcement trailer, the next instalment will return to its roots, long before the franchise entered the world of three dimensions. Taking heed of the outcry from fans of the classics – and maybe even from the recent success of Street Fighter IV—the new Mortal Kombat game will feature 3D character models with combat restricted to 2D.

The game trailer features some of old favourites from the series: Raiden, Shao Kahn, Kung Loa, Kano, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Sektor and Nightwolf, with Scorpion being prominently absent from the current roster of characters. Even the Kombat Arenas appear to be remake of some of the classics: like the Dead Pool, Living Forest, The Pit II, Armoury and the Rooftop. On the flipside, those that revelled in the blood and gore of the first two MK games will be disappointed to know that the trailer points to a relatively bloodless affair, albeit some nasty moves and Fatalities.

Some of the other highlights include tag-team kombat and an enhanced version of Klose Kombat that was introduced in MK vs. DC Universe. Enjoy the trailer below and gear-up to relive you teenage years.
