Ericsson to provide on-demand and catch-up TV services for Tata Sky

Swedish telecom giant Ericsson is making new inroads into the Indian market, recently tying up with Airtel to manage the telecom operator’s networks, and now, with Tata Sky, to provide an ‘advanced TV system’ for the DTH service. The new system will enable users to watch on-demand programming, and, to view catch-up TV. Ericsson had also recently partnered with Tata Sky for its Tata Sky HD venture.

The new service is based on Ericsson’s Media Delivery Network (MDN), a content delivery, distribution, and management solution. It will use its WatchPoint Content Management System, Xport Time-Shifted TV and Xport Producer storage encoding. The Swedish company will also provide managed services for the operation and maintenance of the new project.

As mentioned, the new Progressive Download System will enable two types of viewing – on-demand, and catch-up TV. The former allows users to watch a movie from Tata Sky’s library, while the latter allows users to watch shows that have already been aired.

Speaking on the launch of the new service, Tata Sky CTO, Yigs Riza, said:

“We are pleased to provide the ability (to subscribers) to select their favourites from our exciting range of programmes on-demand, whenever they want to watch them.”

Speaking about the place of the new offering in the Indian market, Ericsson India President and Head of Region, Fredrik Jejdling, said:

“The pay-TV market in India has now reached over 100 million subscribers. Considering the market potential, operators are looking at offering differentiated services in this increasingly competitive environment. We take pride in supporting our customers to deliver the best experience possible to consumers. We’re pleased that Tata Sky has once again trusted our technology and services capabilities for the system and managed services support.”
