Twitter users will be able to write a lot more in their Tweets with the removal of names and images from the character limit. More changes are also expected in the next few months.
Twitter wants you to “express a lot more” in your Tweets, which is why the company has announced that @usernames, photos, GIFs, videos, polls, & quote tweets will not count in the 140 character limit. Don’t jump with joy just yet! Yes, you will be able to write a lot more in your Tweets, but the company says that these changes will happen over the next few months, and that it wants to give its developer community time to make the neccessary changes in products built using the Twitter API.
In addition to the increased writing space, Twitter will also allow users to Retweet their own tweets, “so you can easily Retweet or Quote Tweet yourself when you want to share a new reflection or feel like a really good one went unnoticed.” Users will also not need to put a period before tweets beginning with @usernames. New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers. This will ensure that user Tweets reach a wider audience.
Todd Sherman, Senior Product Manager at Twitter wrote in a recent blogpost, “in addition to the changes outlined above, we have plans to help you get even more from your Tweets. We’re exploring ways to make existing uses easier and enable new ones, all without compromising the unique brevity and speed that make Twitter the best place for live commentary, connections, and conversations.” Happy Tweeting!
