This iPhone setting can expose your Signal chats: Here is how to fix it

After WhatsApp made headlines for the end-to-end encryption controversy, multiple reports surfaced claiming that the US authorities were able to access Signal messages from a seized iPhone. This has sparked a fresh debate over privacy. However, the issue does not stem from a breach of Signal’s encryption. Instead, it shows how notification data stored on devices can expose information when the phone is in someone else’ s hand.

As per the details, investigators were able to get message content from notifications stored on the device, even though the Signal app had been removed and messages were set to disappear. This led to widespread concern, with some users mistakenly assuming that the platform’s end-to-end encryption had been compromised.

Responding to the situation, Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal, stated that the company itself remains secure and that the issue lies with how iOS handles notification previews. If message content is allowed to appear on the lock screen, it may be stored in the system’s notification database.

Whittaker also revealed that Signal has raised concerns with Apple regarding how long notification data is retained, specifically for deleted messages. She also pointed users toward a simple privacy safeguard already available within the app.

Which setting must you change to stay safe

iPhone users can prevent message previews from appearing in notifications by changing a setting within Signal. By selecting the option to hide both sender name and message content in notifications, users can reduce the risk of sensitive data being exposed if their device is accessed without permission.
