Meta AI may get voice upgrade on WhatsApp: Here’s how the new chat feature may work

Amid the growing popularity of Meta AI, WhatsApp is now reportedly testing a new feature that will allow users to initiate real-time voice chats with the chatbot. The new feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.21.21 and is rolling out to select users via the Google Play Store, introducing a dedicated voice interface designed to mimic a call-like experience with the AI assistant.

According to WaBetaInfo, users will be able to start a voice conversations with Meta AI by tapping the waveform icon in the Chats tab. There is also a setting that, if enabled, launches the voice chat automatically when the AI chat window opens; however, this is disabled by default. Users can also initiate a voice chat directly from the Calls tab by tapping once.

When it starts, users using the Meta AI through voice can expect a consistent, hands-free experience even when multitasking. A collapse icon lets the session continue running in the background, allowing users to interact with other apps while maintaining the voice conversation. The new design aims to make AI support more accessible and streamlined, specifically during activities like reading, browsing, or taking notes.

Further the report stated that the new voice interface will support media sharing via quick-access icons for the camera and gallery, with future updates potentially including support for additional file types. Furthermore, the report stated that the feature would protect users’ privacy by utilising Android’s system-level microphone indicator, which typically displays a green dot in the status bar to alert users when the microphone is active. Users can mute the microphone and end the session at any time using on-screen controls.

In terms of rollout, the feature is currently only available to beta testers, but an official timeline has yet to be announced. It is expected to launch in the coming weeks.
