In a move to bridge global linguistic divides, Google has announced a significant enhancement to its Translate service. Leveraging the capabilities of AI, Google Translate now supports 110 new languages, marking its most expansive update yet.

According to Google, the new languages represent more than 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8% of the world’s population. Some are major world languages with over 100 million speakers. Others are spoken by small communities of Indigenous people, and a few have almost no native speakers but active revitalisation efforts.
A significant portion, about a quarter, are African languages such as Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof, marking Google Translate’s most extensive expansion of African language support to date.
