Apple has announced the iPhone 17e as a more affordable entry into the iPhone 17 lineup. Here is a closer look at the price, specifications and the most important differences between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 17.

Apple iPhone 17e vs 17 price in India and storage

The iPhone 17e starts at Rs 64,900 in India with 256 GB of storage. Importantly, 256 GB is now the base storage, which is double of what the 16e offered at launch. The 512 GB storage variant is priced at Rs 84,900.

The iPhone 17, meanwhile, starts at 256 GB too and is priced starting at Rs 82,900 and Rs 1,02,900 for the 512 GB storage.

So, while both phones have the same storage tier, there is a clear pricing gap between them.

Design and Build

The iPhone 17e features an aerospace-grade aluminium frame with a glass back and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers three times better scratch resistance compared to the previous generation. It also includes an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare.

The iPhone 17 uses the same Ceramic Shield 2 protection, aluminium frame and IP68 rating, but it differs in size and overall footprint. The iPhone 17 measures 7.95 mm in thickness and weighs 177 grams, while the 17e is slightly thinner at 7.8mm and weighs 170 grams. It also uses a glass-aluminium sandwich design.

In practical terms, you can say that the build quality is comparable. Both devices are designed to meet the same durability standards, including IP68 protection. The key visual and functional differences are not in build materials, but in display technology and camera layout.

Display

The display is one of the most significant differences between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 17.

The iPhone 17e uses a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel. It supports HDR and reaches up to 1200 nits peak HDR brightness. However, it is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate. There is no ProMotion and there is no always-on display functionality.

The iPhone 17, by contrast, features a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, reaches up to 1000 nits typical brightness, 1600 nits in high brightness mode and up to 3000 nits peak. The LTPO technology also allows dynamic refresh rate scaling, enabling always-on display features.

The 17e’s display has a 2532×1170 pixel resolution, while the 17’s display offers a 2622×1206 pixel resolution. Both have a pixel ratio of 460 ppi.

In everyday use, the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is noticeable in scrolling, animations and gaming responsiveness. The iPhone 17’s panel is not only brighter at peak levels but also more fluid.

Performance

Both phones are powered by the A19 chip built on a 3-nanometer process. The iPhone 17e uses a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU.

The iPhone 17 also uses the A19 but with a 5-core GPU. This gives it a graphics advantage, especially in demanding gaming scenarios. The standard iPhone 17 lists clock speeds up to 4.26 GHz on its performance cores.

The iPhone 17e includes Apple’s new C1X modem, which Apple says is up to two times faster than the C1 modem used in the 16e. It is also designed to be more power-efficient. The iPhone 17 uses the same generation cellular technology and adds Apple’s newer connectivity stack, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.

In terms of raw performance, both devices are close. The GPU configuration and display pairing give the iPhone 17 a performance edge in graphics-heavy use cases.

Cameras

The iPhone 17e features a single 48MP single rear camera. It supports a 2x zoom and captures 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 fps. Portrait mode benefits from a new image pipeline and depth information can be adjusted after capture.

The iPhone 17 uses a dual-camera setup. It includes a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide sensor with a 120-degree field of view. This adds a flexibility that the 17e cannot match as the ultra-wide camera enables landscape shots, tighter indoor framing and more dynamic perspectives.

On the front, the iPhone 17 includes an 18MP camera with PDAF and advanced spatial audio recording. The 17e retains a 12MP front-facing camera similar to its predecessor.

Battery and Charging

Apple has not disclosed the exact battery capacity for the iPhone 17e in its announcement. However, it claims all-day battery life supported by the A19 chip and the C1X modem.

The iPhone 17 includes a 3,692 mAh battery. It supports wired charging with PD and can reach 50% in around 20 minutes. It also supports wireless charging of up to 25W over MagSafe or Qi2.

The iPhone 17e now supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, which is a significant improvement over the 7.5W limit on the 16e. It can charge up to 50% in around 30 minutes wirelessly and supports fast wired charging via USB-C.

The addition of MagSafe is one of the most meaningful upgrades for the 17e compared to its predecessor, but the iPhone 17 still offers faster peak wireless charging speeds.

Connectivity and Features

Both phones support satellite-based features such as Emergency SOS, Messages via satellite, Find My via satellite and crash detection.

The iPhone 17 includes Ultra Wideband support with a second-generation chip, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.

Conclusion

The iPhone 17e brings meaningful improvements over the 16e, including the A19 chip, MagSafe support, C1X modem and 256GB base storage. It offers the same Apple experience but without stepping into flagship pricing territory.

The iPhone 17, however, delivers a more complete hardware package. Its 120Hz LTPO display, dual-camera system with ultrawide lens, brighter panel, faster wireless charging and higher-end connectivity features make it a more capable device overall.

For users who prioritise a more responsive, brighter display, a versatile camera system, and also don’t mind paying the extra cash, the iPhone 17 stands ahead. For those who want the latest chip, MagSafe and generous base storage at a lower entry price, the iPhone 17e narrows the gap significantly but does not close it entirely.
