Want better AC cooling this summer? Try this free trick

HIGHLIGHTS

A simple water trick can help your AC cool a room better on very hot days.

Pouring water on the outdoor unit may improve cooling and reduce extra strain on the AC.

Make sure the AC is switched off and avoid spraying water on electrical parts.

Summer afternoons can be brutal, especially if you live in India, where the temperature can climb past 40 degrees Celsius. If your AC keeps running all day but your room still feels like a blast furnace, then you might think something is broken. However, most of the time, nothing is wrong with the unit itself. The real problem is the heat outside. Your AC has an outdoor unit that pushes the hot air from your room back outside. When the outside air is already very hot, this becomes harder to do. The system ends up working longer, using more electricity, and still struggling to cool the room. The good news is that a simple bucket of water can actually help.

Prerequisites

Here are some of the things you should keep in mind before you execute the trick:

  • Before trying this trick, make sure the outdoor unit is easy to reach and not damaged.
  • Check that the fins and the outer body are in reasonable condition.
  • Turn off the AC completely from the power source.
  • Use either a bucket or just a simple garden hose that is not under high pressure.
  • The use of a pressure washer should be avoided since the force of such a tool may bend the metallic fins.
  • Also be careful to keep water away from the electrical parts, wiring, and control panels on the unit.

AC water trick to improve cooling performance

AC water trick to improve cooling performance

Slowly pour clean water over the metal fins and coil area on the sides of the outdoor unit. As the water evaporates, it pulls heat away from the surface.

This ensures that the outdoor part of your AC unit does not struggle to get rid of heat, thereby working efficiently. This method proves to be highly effective when used in very hot but dry weather conditions since the water evaporates quickly.

Since humid areas contain water vapour, the water will take longer to dry out and help your AC unit. You need to wait for 30 minutes after dumping water before turning your AC back on.

Benefits of pouring water on the outdoor AC unit

When the outdoor unit stays cool, the AC cools your room faster and with less effort. This can help save electricity on very hot days. The water also washes off dust and dirt from the coils, letting air flow better and helping the unit run more smoothly.
