Buying a robot vacuum cleaner with mopping under Rs 50000? Check these key features first

I have spent the past few weeks testing a robot vacuum cleaner, and in the research for that, I realised this is a very tech-heavy product, and the market is also very dense with options. I have accumulated my findings about the key criteria, such as suction figures, mop mechanisms, navigation systems in use, etc. Also, a robot vacuum cleaner comes with so many parts that you have to understand what each of them does, and in case any of them get damaged, their replacement must be readily available. So, that aspect is also considered. If you are planning to buy a robot vacuum-and-mop combo under Rs 50,000, this article should act as a guide and help you sift through the marketing fluff and focus on what actually matters.

Things to check before buying a robot vacuum cleaner

Automation

If the reason you intend to invest in a vacuum cleaner is to reduce the physical work, then you can go all-in and buy a fully hands-free operation, meaning you are not emptying the bin or cleaning the mop pad daily. In this case, you need a model with an auto-emptying dustbin that can go 60 days or more between interventions. Some models compress the collected dust instead of bagging it. If you also want the mopping side to be hands-free, look for a base station that can wash and dry the mop pads automatically after each run. Such models would cost you more.

If you are comfortable doing a quick daily check (emptying the bin, rinsing the mop pad, refilling the water tank), you can save money and get a capable machine for less.

Suction power and noise

Suction is measured in pascals (Pa). The higher this number, the stronger the suction and the better the cleaner can pick up dirt and debris. In standard cleaning, the vacuum cleaner will not run at full throttle, unless it has to seriously clean the carpet, rug or denser debris.

Strong suction modes drain batteries faster.

Battery life

Every robot vacuum now comes with auto-recharge and resume: when the battery runs low, it returns to the dock, charges enough to finish the job, and picks up from where it left off. They could last between 1 hour and 4 hours. That said, recharging could take anywhere from 30 minutes to around 3 hours, depending on the model.

Also keep in mind that batteries generally start degrading around the 4-year mark, and is a long-term maintenance cost that you should factor in from the start.

Dust bin and water tank capacity

If you don’t want to regularly empty the dustbin pouch, you are recommended to spend on a one with this feature. These models are costlier, and the replacement dust bags are an additional long-term cost you must factor in.

Similarly, for the mop function, water tank sizes vary by form factor.

As for filling them, you will have to manually do that, at least for the models sold in India.

Mopping mechanism

A flat microfibre pad found in lower-end models works fine for picking up fine dust and light marks, but lacks the pressure for deeper cleaning. In higher-end models, you will find a rotating disc mop, which can be circular or triangular in shape. These mops spin with a downward pressure.

At the top of this price tier, some premium models are moving to a continuous roller brush for mopping, a format that works similarly to a floor scrubber and handles tougher messes better.

Additionally, you can also look for extendable mops that can reach as close as 1 cm from corners and furniture legs, and a mop lift, which allows the robot to raise the mop pad when it detects carpet.

Some models also adjust how wet the mop gets depending on the floor type.

If you want the most hands-free experience, look for robot vacuum cleaners with a base station that supports hot-water mop washing and air drying. You get the mop clean and dry with this feature.

Such advanced models will require a 16-amp plug point due to the power required for heating.

Floor and height clearance

Needless to say, the floor must be flat, like sealed hard floors, tiles, laminate, and vinyl. Advanced robot vacuum cleaners can clean carpets and rugs. They can lift the mop pads when carpet is detected and vacuum the dust and dirt from the carpet/rug. Alternatively, you can also set those areas as no-mop zones.

Ensure the vacuum cleaner supports a height clearance of 3.5 to 4 inches (9 cm to 10.5 cm) to clean below sofas, beds, etc. If the door has a threshold in front of it, then see if it is below 2 cms. LIDAR-based robot vacuum cleaners may not be able to cross higher door thresholds.

Gyro isn’t as effective in detecting and avoiding obstacles as LIDAR. Camera-based robot vacuum cleaners will struggle in low-light conditions or identifying bumps. Having both LIDAR and a camera is a good thing.

Some LIDAR-based premium models can retract their sensors to squeeze under lower furniture.

Weight and noise

Most vacuums in this range sit between 60 and 70 decibels in normal mode, which is roughly the volume of a conversation. Turbo or max suction modes push many past 70 dB. If you live in an apartment or plan to run the vacuum at night, look for models with a dedicated quiet or eco mode. Robot vacuums have a natural advantage here, as you can schedule them to run when you are out.

Miscellaneous features

Smart app features, including room-specific scheduling, no-go zones, and multi-floor map management, are important. And those who don’t like using an app, a remote controller could come in handy. A strong internet connection is key to retrieving maps and for the machine to work. Look, if the model requires a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection.

Although a single side brush is fine for the most part, some models come with two brushes, one on each side. Extendable brushes can be helpful in cleaning corners.

Build quality and replacement parts

Everything from the machine’s body to the brushes to the mops pads to the connecting hinges of these extensions should be of good quality for durability and proper functioning. The brush bristles shouldn’t tangle.

During use, their weight doesn’t matter as the dock sits in a place and the vacuum cleaner runs on its own.

Before buying, check how good the service network is, how easily the replacement parts are available and how costly they are. Read online reviews or watch videos about the product. The warranty policy or the number of years offered also play a key role in your experience.
