Portable AC vs tower air cooler: How do they work?

A tower air cooler uses evaporative cooling to reduce the temperature. It pulls warm air through water-soaked honeycomb pads. As the water evaporates, the air becomes cooler and is blown into the room. For effective cooling, a window or door should remain slightly open to allow proper airflow.

A portable AC works like a normal AC. It uses refrigerant coils to cool the air and also removes humidity from the room. It works best in a closed room and needs an exhaust hose connected to a window or a wall opening to release hot air outside.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler: Which is cheaper to run?

When it comes to purchase price, tower air coolers are much more affordable. Most models are available between Rs 6,500 and Rs 15,000. Portable ACs are comparatively more expensive, with prices usually starting around Rs 30,000 and going beyond Rs 55,000 depending on the model and features. Speaking of the energy consumption, tower air coolers generally use only 80W to 200W of power. Meanwhile, portable ACs consume between 900W and 1500W, which can lead to higher electricity bills.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler: Which is easier to maintain?

Tower air coolers are simple to maintain. You have to refill the water tank, clean the filters occasionally, and wash the cooling pads from time to time to prevent dust buildup and bad odours.

Portable ACs require more attention. Besides cleaning filters regularly, you must ensure that the exhaust hose is properly installed. Some models also collect water that needs to be emptied. In addition, professional servicing may be required if there are issues with the cooling system.

Portable AC vs tower air cooler: Which one should you choose?

A tower air cooler is a good choice if you want lower running costs, easy maintenance, and live in an area with dry weather. A portable AC is a better option if you need stronger cooling, live in a humid region and want to cool a closed room without installing a fixed AC.
