Meta working on smart glasses, smartwatch and camera buds: 5 key product details
You’d be excused to think Meta and Mark Zuckerberg are ONLY synonymous with some of the most popular social platforms in the world. Oh no, dear reader, Zuckerberg is actively expanding Meta’s wearable technology portfolio, focusing on integrating advanced AI features into a range of new products, as highlighted by a Bloomberg report.
SurveyThis strategic move aims to enhance user experiences and position Meta competitively in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Below is an overview of five key products currently in development, along with their tentative launch timelines and comparisons to existing market competitors.
1) Supernova 2: Oakley-branded smart glasses
In collaboration with Oakley, Meta is developing smart glasses tailored for athletes, particularly cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. Dubbed “Supernova 2,” these glasses are anticipated to feature a centrally positioned camera, enabling users to capture photos and videos hands-free. The design is expected to align with Oakley’s sporty aesthetic, incorporating performance-oriented features such as polarized lenses and a durable, lightweight frame.

Expected to launch later in 2025, the Supernova 2 is set to compete with products like the Solos AirGo V (Vision) smart glasses, where Meta’s offering is likely to integrate seamlessly with its existing ecosystem, providing a cohesive user experience for those already engaged with Meta’s social platforms.
2) Hypernova: Smart glasses with built-in display
The “Hypernova” smart glasses represent a significant advancement in Meta’s eyewear lineup. These glasses are expected to feature a built-in display on the right lens, projecting information directly into the user’s field of view. This functionality aims to support simple applications, notifications, and photo viewing, edging closer to a true AR experience.
The Hypernova glasses will likely rival products such as the XReal Air 2, which offers immersive display capabilities for media consumption, the first glimpse of which we’ll see later this year in 2025.
3) Artemis: Meta’s first true AR glasses
These are expected to be Meta’s crown jewels in terms of wearable experiences. Codenamed “Artemis,” these glasses aim to deliver a comprehensive AR experience by superimposing digital information onto the real world. Features may include advanced display technology, precise spatial mapping, and seamless integration with Meta’s AI capabilities, facilitating interactive applications such as navigation, gaming, and real-time translation.

With reports suggesting a 2027 launch timeline, Meta’s Artemis is poised to compete with anticipated AR glasses from tech giants like Apple and Google.
4) Meta Smartwatch
Reports are indicating that Meta is revisiting its smartwatch development, aiming to create a device that complements its smart glasses. The smartwatch is expected to see the light of day later this year in 2025, and will have functionality to display photos taken with the glasses and possibly control various functionalities, serving as an extension of Meta’s wearable ecosystem.

This hitherto unnamed Meta smartwatch will enter a market dominated by devices like the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch. Only time will tell how it will fare.
5. Meta’s camera earbuds (“Camera Buds”)
Internally being referred to as “Camera Buds,” these upcoming Meta earbuds are envisioned to include built-in cameras capable of capturing the surrounding environment. Integrated with AI, the earbuds could perform tasks such as object recognition and real-time translation, providing users with contextual information through audio feedback.
Needless to say, this “Camera Buds” concept is relatively novel, with few direct competitors. However, Apple is reportedly exploring similar ideas, potentially developing AirPods with built-in cameras.
All this makes clear one thing – that Mark Zuckerberg wants to push Meta-branded devices into the market with full force, starting in 2025 itself. Meta’s forthcoming products reflect a strategic effort to embed AI and AR technologies into everyday accessories, enhancing user interaction and connectivity.
